Slender yet durable, the Sony ICD-SX712 Digital Voice Recorder has up to 2 GB of flash memory and offers up to 536 hours of recording time in the MP3 8kbps mode. Memory Stick Micro cards in capacities to 16 GB can be inserted into the unit for different applications. A microSDHC card from 4 GB to 32 GB is also supported. With a slim, light aluminum body, this recorder is easy to take with you and comes with a USB port for high-speed file transfer to a PC. Digital voice operated recording stops the recording during silent pauses, and then without missing a syllable, reactivates it when speaking resumes conserving recording time and eliminating soundless gaps in the recording. The ICD-SX712 offers direct USB connection to a PC and is compatible with Dragon Naturally Speaking™ voice-to-print software, helping busy professionals quickly get their thoughts down on paper.
Six recording modes, including uncompressed Linear PCM, 320kbps MP3 Stereo, 192kbps MP3 Stereo, 128kbps MP3 Stereo, 48kbps MP3 Mono and 8kbps MP3 Mono, let users achieve the preferred sound quality and recording time. The recorder features a highly sensitive triple microphone array to meet the needs of not only business users, but also musicians and podcasters. The backlit dot-matrix LCD shows the record level as well as the MP3 ID3-tag if the user uploads music content to the device. The recording level can be set to either Automatic Gain Control for traditional dictation uses, but can also be set for Manual Adjustment for special applications. The ICD-SX712 provides easy playback of unsecured MP3 and WMA audio files.

- The recorder features stereo recording modes with a frequency response of 40 Hz - 20,000 Hz for Linear PCM and 40 Hz - 16,000 Hz for MP3. Linear PCM is a WAV audio file which can record sound without compression, providing higher quality than MP3, but large file sizes. This codec is recommended for recording when the sound quality is extremely important, such as when recording a musical performance.
