Olympus ED 90-250mm f2.8 Zuiko Digital Zoom Lens

Features in Detail | Enlarged Image

The Olympus Zuiko Digital ED 90-250mm f2.8 lens is a versatile and durable high-performance lens that realizes many advantages from the Four Thirds system -- notably consistently superior optical clarity and speed. The ED glass and fast f2.8 aperture of this performance telephoto zoom give you the flexibility to shoot sports, nature and more. The unique 90-250mm Zuiko Digital Telephoto to Ultra-Telephoto Zoom is equivalent to a 180-500mm f2.8 in 35mm photography. The power of this ultra-telephoto zoom range enables quick, optimal framing for shooting sports and nature, where shot positioning is often constrained. Splash-proof and dust-proof, with all-metal barrel construction, this is the lens you can depend on, in any environment.

2.78x Super-Telephoto Zoom Lens
The unique 90-250mm Zuiko Digital Telephoto to Super-Telephoto Zoom is equivalent to a 180-500mm f2.8 in 35mm photography.
Expanded Shooting Capabilities of a Large-Aperture, F2.8, Super-Telephoto Zoom Lens
This top-class professional super-telephoto zoom lens offers a bright F2.8 aperture at any zoom setting. Its sharp, clear imaging performance at F2.8 makes it an ideal choice in situations that require fast shutter speeds or a shallow depth of field. It also instantly allows optimum framing for efficient sports and wildlife photography in situations where it is difficult to get close to the subject.
17 Elements In 12 Groups, Including Three ED Glass Lens Elements
Compared to an ordinary optical glass lens, the ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass lens presents extremely small changes in refractivity in the wavelengths from blue to red. It can improve the imaging performance of lenses by reducing chromatic aberration (a phenomenon caused by the dispersion of light produced by deviation of the focusing point due to color differences) that causes color fringing or contrast degradation. Optimum use of ED lenses makes it possible to effectively correct chromatic aberration and achieve sharp, high-contrast imaging performance.
Inner Focusing Mechanism with a Minimum Focusing Distance of Just 8.2 Feet
An inner focusing mechanism is used to assure a minimum focusing distance of only 8.2 feet. The inner focusing system features a "floating" mechanism that ensures excellent image quality at all ranges from infinity right down to the minimum focusing distance.
Multi-Coated Lens
The Four Thirds system uses advanced lens coating technology in order to achieve optimum color balance and to reduce ghosts and flare. This coating reduces reflections regardless of the light incident angle and at a wide range of wavelengths, and has been independently optimized for each lens element. Care is also taken to prevent the digital-specific phenomenon of ghosts and flare due to reciprocal reflections between the image sensor and lens element surface. Together these refinements ensure accurate representation of natural light even in photographing against the light, providing excellent imaging performance with high contrast.
Digital Specific Lens™
Zuiko Digital lenses are designed to focus light straight into an imager's pixel wells, to fill every pixel consistently. It's optical technology that delivers an image filled from center to edge with rich, accurate color, high contrast and subtle gradation. Designed exclusively for digital photography, Zuiko Digital lenses provide a level of precision that's simply unattainable from a digital body using a traditional 35mm film lens.

The Olympus FourThirds Standard uses lenses which are just as powerful as the lenses previously developed for 35mm film camera systems despite being about half the size. Thus the focal length of the 90-250mm in the FourThirds Standard gives the same angle of view as a 180-500mm lens for a 35mm film camera. It is important to know that this is not a 2x "crop factor" -- Olympus E-System lenses are designed for this size format and have a much higher resolution than lenses designed generally for 35mm film cameras. The benefit: superb image quality but less weight to carry.

Zuiko lenses feature a near telecentric design that ensures that the light hits the photodiodes at right angles, thus avoiding the problem of blurring at the edges of the image, or corner shading, which often occurs when using lenses originally designed for 35mm film cameras. Combined with the high resolution of Olympus Zuiko Digital lenses, this lens design exploits the full potential of the digital camera image sensors. The result is clear photos with strong colors and sharp contrasts right to the edges of the image.

Smart System
Zuiko Digital lenses communicate image information directly to the Olympus E-System Digital SLR for a level of exposure accuracy that's beyond the capabilities of a passive lens.
Reliable Dust and Water Droplet Resistant Construction
External components are thoroughly sealed to ensure high resistance to dust and moisture. As a result, the lens can withstand the rigorous demands of professional shooting under adverse conditions.
Responsive Core-less Motor for High-Speed Auto-focusing
The auto-focus drive system uses a highly responsive core-less motor to assure faster auto-focusing and stress-free shooting.
Circular Aperture Diaphragm
A circular aperture diaphragm with 9 blades ensures smooth background blurring at larger apertures.
Focus Limit Switch and Focus Stop Button
A focus limit switch allows focusing time to be reduced by limiting the focus range to far distances or near distances. In addition, there is a focus stop button to prevent the auto-focus system from responding to foreground movement after correct focus on the primary subject has been achieved.
